Welcome to the temporary home of the Cape Town Professional Photographers Association aka CTPPA.
The CTPPA has been formed to engage the City of Cape Town around issue with the current legislation governing the issue of permits for photography in and around the City. With the current legislation all photographers, be they hobbyist or professional, need to register with the city and provide proof of Public Liability insurance before their application will be approved. After the application has been approved, the photographer will have to apply on-line for a shoot permit which can take up to 48 hours to issue and can only be issued during week days.
This poses a problem for a lot of Cape Town Photographers for reasons including but not limited to:
- Not all shoots can be planned 48 hours in advance.
- Not all shoots are commercial and locations often need top be changed at the last minute.
- Hobbyist’s do not have Public Liability insurance and they should not be forced to as they pose no more risk that runners, cyclists, people flying kites.
The City consulted with organisations such as SAASP (South African Association of Stills) who seems to share some of our concerns but don’t necessarily understand all of them so it is important that we have a body that can represent us when dealing with the City of Cape Town as the will not engage individuals.
The more photographers that join the CTPPA, he stronger case we have for the City of Cape Town to find a solution that works for us as it currently is not implementing the policy that it preaches which is “This City works for you”
Update 3 February 2012
Last night I was contacted by the Chairman of the Cape Film Commission asking if we would be agreeable to meet with them next week. We have a meeting scheduled with them for Tuesday and additionally the head of the Film and events office at the City of Cape and they are willing to engage with the CTPPA. lets keep growing the membership numbers so that we are really taken as a serious player in these negotiations.
To sign-up, all you need to do is complete the form below which will authorise us to appoint a group to meet with the city and discuss our concerns. Once we have what we feel is a viable solution, we will post it on-line for the comment of the CTPPA members.
We will do the hard work from here but if you want to help, please speak to your local councillor or MP and make them aware of the website and that the CTPPA intends to make sure that the situation changes.
